As your child grows so should their surroundings in their room. Sometimes your vision of a dream room for your child is not exactly what your teen was imagining. So when it’s time to have that conversation with your children, consider getting their opinion and getting them involved when it comes to a room makeover. After all, teens can be territorial and believe you might be invading their living space. But it doesn’t have to be a battle. Which is why we collected some great interior design ideas for your growing teen and some tips on how to make the transition a bit easier and help bring you closer to your kids.
Homeowners across the country agree that summer is a great time to start their home remodeling projects. Dreams of a new kitchen, a new bathroom, and the perfect patio or deck are usually at top of mind. But for some, the kid’s room is just as important. Most parents will agree that providing their children with a wonderful living space in which they can thrive, learn and play is of paramount importance. A child’s surroundings can have a huge impact on how they grow and develop, so parents always try to make their children’s living spaces as comfortable and fun as possible within their means. Sleeping in a bed that looks like a pirate ship or a princess’ wagon, as one can imagine, would probably fill a child’s life with endless hours of joy.
Start with color. Let your children decide what color matches their personality. Collect color samples together from your local hardware store or surf the web for inspiration. Put together a color palette of their favorite choices and test it out on an old piece of furniture or use any one of these apps online to help you visualize the paint color for their room. Remember, it’s okay to add texture or faux paint to add style to the walls.
Next, talk about storage. As kids get older, interest in fashion grows and so does their collection of shoes and wardrobe. And after school activities may lead into a growing collection of sporting or musical equipment. And having a place to safely store everything may become an issue. Consider expanding the closet or adding a room to your home. Otherwise, think about adding custom cabinets to the walls and giving them some space in the garage. Or, encourage your children to get rid of the clutter and turn it into cash by having a rummage sale together. Ultimately, let your kids decide what should stay and what should go. Then come up with a solution.
Once you’ve agreed on color and organization, you can start working on flooring. There are many different choices. Hardwood floors, carpet, throw rugs, tile, vinyl, cement, and stone are just a few. Take the same steps as choosing color and visit a design gallery or consult with an interior designer or your general contractor to weight out your choices.
Finally, pick out new bedroom furniture together or refinish and reface existing ones. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh coat of paint or staining cabinets and dressers to update the look in a room. Select new bedding, curtains, blinds and shades together. Then sit with your home remodeler or interior designer and ask to see samples of hardware, fittings, knobs, and lighting fixtures to help add pop to the room. Once your child’s room makeover is complete, feel the difference in mood and enjoy.
